Trail Names

I changed my trail name while in Hong Kong.  My trail name had been Buzzard which goes back to the 1970's and CB radios.  Buzzard was my handle because I flew hang gliders and buzzards are very graceful, beautiful, and efficient gliders (but not particularly beautiful to look at).  In Hong Kong, there is a bird called the "Black-eared Kite" that is similar to the buzzard in flight.  Commonly found along Victoria harbour, as well as, in the mountains of Hong Kong.  The head of the bird is much more like a hawk or eagle and I regularly saw the bird at work and from my apartment window. I decided to adopt the trail name "Kite".

Sandpiper. Deciding on my name was a joint effort of family and friends. Growing up, I spent much time along the Jersey shore and have always been partial to the Sandpiper. This little shorebird prefers to walk along the water's edge, rather than take flight. Its "walk" is rather quick and it appears to be directionally challenged, often skirting from place to place. These characteristics decribe me fairly well - I hike with short, little steps and prefer to follow Hal because my natural sense of direction would lead me to "who knows where." Although I don't mind flying in airplanes, I have a pretty intense objection to heights and prefer to keep my feet on the ground. So, Sandpiper I am.
