Why?

Why hike the AT?  I am sure the answer will change by the time I am done.  It has already changed since that first 3 week hike from Rockfish Gap to Harper's Ferry in 2007.  There are many reasons people do it:
  • physical challenge - to get fit; to test themselves; to set a record; ....
  • mental challenge - to change themselves; to test themselves
  • to heal  - some people start the hike following a personal tragedy
  • escape - from the crowd;  from the job; from the daily rat race
For me, originally, I think escape was a big part of it.  Sitting at my desk, working long hours, the idea of going on a long walk was very appealing.  Replacing deadlines and responsibilities with a simple life of hiking, eating, and sleeping was an impossible dream.

Also a big part of it was the physical challenge to get fit and to lose weight.  I think the time I spend doing this now will pay big dividends for the rest of my life.

The reason I am doing it now is simply because I can.  The early retirement from SWIFT, while unwelcome is some ways, allowed be to take time out, and spend 7 months chasing what was previously only a dream.
