19 July - Mahoosuc Notch, Speck Pond Shelter

Rainy, upper 60s

Day began with a climb of Fulling Mill Mountain then down to Mahoosuc Notch. Even this part was slow due to the steepness. The attached pictures show the first part of the hike and pictures of the shelter and pond. Speck Pond is the highest body of water in Maine.

The rain held off until we were about 1/4 of the way through the Notch. I took some pictures of it but had to put the camera away in the rain. I sent these pictures in a separate posting. It took us almost 3 hours to cross the one mile of the Notch. In all, it took 10 hours to go 5.1 miles.

The morning was nice, although quite steep. We were above tree line for a while. The first part of the Notch was fun but after the rain came, it became a challenge to not fall. I never felt so tired after five miles.

There really is ice down in the holes and caves at the bottom of the Notch. The Notch is a big (1 mile long) boulder field at the bottom of a gap.

We (includiing Flatlander) are in the shelter with Snowman (met him at the Royalty Inn), Plans Too Much and Captain Bly, and Hard Rock (new NoBo).
