02 Aug - Caratunk, ME

Sunny and nice.  Low 70s.

The shelter last night was great and close to the pond.  This morning a moose came next to the shelter.   When Flatlander got up it spooked and ran off through the woods before anyone could see it.

Today was our turn for a milestone.  One tenth of a mile past the shelter we passed 1000 miles on the AT since we left Harper's Ferry on April 02.  We are about 150 miles from Katahdin.

We are well into Maine pond country.  Last night at West Carry; morning break at East Carry with a sand beach; lunch at Pierce Pond.  Between here and Katahdin, we wander all over going around the lakes.

Between the ponds are the swamps or bogs.  We have been looking for two carnivorous plants that grow there and Flatlander spotted them today.  The larger Pitcher Plant has a trumpet shape that traps insects and the small Sundew has hairs that trap them.

After lunch,  we had a small,  gradual climb and a long gradual decent to the Kennnebec River.  It is the lowest point of the AT in Maine and about 250 yards wide there. There is no bridge and the ATC provides a ferry service via canoe.  People have forded on foot and some have died.  The dam up river can release water causing a two to four foot sudden rise.  The ferry is the official trail - notice the white blaze in the canoe.

We are in a hostel tonight and plan some slack packing.   Forecast is five days of rain.
