12 Aug - Whitehouse Landing Wilderness Camp

Another beautiful hiking day.  Blue skies, white clouds, and low humidity.  High in low 70s.

We saw our best view of Katahdin so far.  It is close enough that I can crop the picture and make it visible on the web.  It is the first picture attached.

We hiked only six miles, plus another mile off trail to get to the boat landing.  This is a great place for a nero (nearly a zero).  They have canoes, kayaks,  swimming, and of course, just much needed rest beside a pleasant lake.

Whitehouse Landing is a primitive camp.  They have no electricity in the camp but they do have gas lights and hot water for a shower.

To get here, you have to hike 0.2 miles down a side road and then find the trail to follow 1 mile along the edge of Pemadumcook Lake.  There is a boat landing there and the camp is across the lake.  You blow the air horn and they come across in a boat to pick you up and return to camp.

We are staying in a small one room log cabin.  They also have a bunk house and a cottage with private rooms.  The main building has the big dining room and kitchen.  Good place to come back to for a vacation.

They have great food here (and the best prices for miles around).  The main offering is the one pound hamburger.  They also have good pizza.

  1. Great trip! As much as possible drink a lot of water while taking on a camping trip.
